Leeds City Art Gallery Residency
To coincide with the reopening to Leeds City Art Gallery on 21st June, Leeds based illustration/design/art/craft collective Hooray Hurrah will take up residence at Leeds City Art Gallery. The collective will be working within the gallery space over the coming weeks, with the aim of producing a large scale, wall based installation that will give the public an insight into the practical working relationship between the artists, and a glimpse into the often private workings of an illustrator/artist.
As a starting point of this project Hooray Hurrah have been asked to respond to two images, taken by Peter Mitchell, of the Quarry Hill area of the city; both of which are interior shots of the development that once stood on the site. The group will be looking at different aspects of the history of Quarry Hill and the many ways the land has been used and misused. As well as research carried out by the members of the group, Hooray Hurrah would like to invite visitors of the gallery to leave their own memories and recollections of the Quarry Hill area. The information left in the visitor’s book will impact the work that is created during the ongoing exhibition. In addition to this other elements may also be introduced into the space which will require some degree of audience interaction and participation.
Due to the number of artists working within the one project, the outcome cannot really be foreseen, the work will not be preplanned, and each artist will need to adapt and improvise to achieve success within such a freeform exercise. Although there will be no intended traditional narrative structure within the work as a whole, it is likely that due to the style in which many of the artists practice, their close interaction, and the improvised nature of the project, unintended themes and structures will appear throughout the creation of the work.

So far, the collective is exploring the idea of compartmentalised spaces and invites gallery visitors to take part by making their own birdboxes to be displayed alongside the collaborative work. Download a handy birdbox template in pdf format here.
